Driven by the support of Governor Gina Raimondo, Rhode Island has implemented Computer Science for Rhode Island (CS4RI) – a statewide K-12 computer science education initiative - with the goal of offering computer science classes in every public school in Rhode Island by December 2017. CS4RI brings together a coalition of research institutions, government, and private/public partners to offer a menu of low or no-cost options for schools to expand CS education in kindergarten through grade 12. Emphasis on partnerships and outreach allows Rhode Island students to benefit from quick access to 21stcentury CS skills while education policy and procedures are under discussion.
This redesign of traditional education has the potential to serve as a model for innovative change in school systems through statewide engagement and collaboration.
